In 1933 a group of avant-garde architects, sculptors and
painters formed Unit One. According to Paul Nash, they stood
for ‘the expression of a truly contemporary spirit’.
Wells Coates formulated a credo for Unit One in which he
called for the economic and social problems of the day,
and not the styles of the past, to guide the architect in
his attempts to produce ‘a formal aspect of order
and significance’. *
